Well said! I taught my kids, as they were growing up, how to learn. Once you understand the learning process and you know you can the teacher is merely a source of information.

I believe freeculture is here and clearly powerful, but I like it less and less the ruder and more dismissive it becomes of other ways and means of creative expression and the management of knowledge. Any change has pros and cons. This revolution has arrived. It is a good time to ask about the cons, as well as the pros.

Most teachers I have witnessed operating a class may give the students a chance to have some form of feedback about the course and it's content, however they take the info on board later rather than sooner, if they give then scope to discuss early in the process, they RISK mutiny (their perception) and who wants that... you have less control over mutiny that a teacher directed "Here is how it is" approach. the latter is less engaging and fun but it retains some sanity for a stressed teacher.

Teachers often determine the learning content, based on curriculum guidelines set "elsewhere" however most teachers I have come across in secondary schools seem to fail dismally to create ENGAGING programs, the sort where students willingly, readily, expectantly go to the class with vim and vigour wanting to be immersed in learning. Instead it becomes a battle ground.

And ownership...a teacher who feels a strong proprietory sense of their material, and wants to share it from that perspective will provide a more rewarding and memorable class, with more emphasis on content that on delivery.

How would you recommend we market learning environments? If I put up a sign saying "We sell Scholar360, a learning environment" at a conference, people will immediately ask me: "Is it online?" Putting the "e" in front of words is a quick way to indicate that it's online or has something to do with the internet. What else should marketer use?

Your readers may be interested in an NLE (Network Learning Environment) - which combines the best of both the CMS/LMS and Social Networking/Web 2.0 tools to center learning around the student, while still providing a course approach.

I agree. And I also think that the next curve in CMS/LMS systems are what we like to call NLE's - Network Learning Environments. They combine the tools teachers need to instruct students, the tools students need to learn, and Web 2.0 features to help student interact with their learning material in an effective and engaging way.
