Some transferable skills are more tangible than others. While it may be difficult in a half hour interview to demonstrate your full range of skills, such as your ability to manage time, motivate coworkers, or coordinate tasks, many technical skills are easy to confirm. They look nice on resumes. Although all transferable skills are useful in different settings, some concrete technical skills may be worth taking on as an online learning system or face-to-face class to give you an extra edge in the job market.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 4Have you ever worked in a collaborative professional or learning system environment? If so, you probably have a few solid human relations skills. These might include: developing rapport, being sensitive, listening, conveying feelings, providing support for others, motivating, sharing credit, counseling, cooperating, delegating with respect, representing others, perceiving feelings and situations, and asserting oneself. 

Organization, management and leadership skills include: initiating new ideas, handling details, coordinating tasks, managing groups, delegating responsibility, conducting a learning system, coaching, counseling, promoting change, selling ideas or products, decision making with others, and managing conflict. 

Finally, work survival skills refer to the day-to-day skills which help in promoting effective production and work satisfaction. They include implementing decisions, cooperating, enforcing policies, being punctual, managing time, attending to detail, meeting goals, enlisting help in a project or learning system, accepting responsibility, setting and meeting deadlines, organizing, and making decisions.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 3Have you completed an online learning system and are ready to begin your job search? Do a little brainstorming before resume-writing or interviewing. Most people have a wealth of transferable skills under their belts that they don’t even realize they have. If you’ve ever held a job or undergone any type of learning system (just about everyone!) you’ve probably picked up a host of skills that may be applicable to your new job. 

One transferable skill is communication, which includes things like: writing concisely, speaking effectively, expressing ideas, facilitating group discussion, providing appropriate feedback, negotiating, perceiving nonverbal messages, persuading, reporting information, describing feelings, interviewing, and editing. 

Another is researching and planning, which includes: forecasting and predicting, creating ideas, identifying and solving problems, imagining alternatives, identifying resources, gathering information, setting goals, extracting important information, defining needs, analyzing, and developing evaluation strategies. Take out a piece of paper and make a mind map of your professional and learning system experiences. Maximize your professional marketability.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 2Are you an online learning system student looking to start a job or change careers? Market your transferable skills. 

At the core of transferable skills are three kinds: technical, data, and people skills. Technical skills refer to your knowledge of technology like computer programs or learning management systems, or more practical technology skills like the ability to construct or repair. Data skills refers to things like good record keeping, performing research, organizing a classroom learning system, or detailed analysis-writing. And people skills includes communication, leadership, coaching and training. 

However, a more comprehensive break-down would put transferable skills into five sub-sections. These are: Communication; Research and Planning; Human Relations; Organization, Management and Leadership; and Work Survival. Experience working in an online learning system or in a team project might spread across many of these sub-sections.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 1As workplaces change with the global economy, a wide range of abilities called “transferable skills” becomes increasingly important. Experience working collaboratively in an online learning system, LMS or professional environment is often good fodder for transferable skill-building. 

What are transferable skills, exactly? 

They are skills that you’ve accumulated throughout your life in settings such as jobs, education and collaborative learning systems, parenting and childcare, hobbies and sports–almost any activity. They include abilities like multi-tasking, delegating responsibility, motivating others, assessing and evaluating one’s own work as well as others’, attention to details, and dealing with obstacles and challenges. Transferable skills are just that–skills that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job.
